New range of motors for hazardous or explosive atmospheres with international IECEx Certification

A new line of motors, certified to the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standards within the IECEx Certified Equipment Scheme, is now available from Baldor. This certification allows the company to meet customer needs in the international market with motors that are designed to meet the requirements for use in hazardous or explosive atmospheres.

The initial offering includes the Ex dI / IIB Gb T* for explosive gas atmospheres, and the Ex tb IIIC T* Db IP6X for explosive dust atmospheres, where T* represents various temperature codes. These motors cover the NEMA® frame ranges of 180-449T and IEC 112S-280H, and are similar to Baldor’s Class I and Class II Division 1 offering.

To achieve the IECEx Certification, Baldor designed the motors to comply with the IEC standards, and submitted the product for testing by an accredited IECEx test laboratory. The product also had to undergo an independent review for certification by an IECEx certification body, and the company will be required to maintain a quality record on each motor shipped. The objective of the IECEx System is to facilitate international trade in equipment for use in explosive atmospheres, while maintaining the required level of safety.

Hazardous areas and explosive atmospheres relate to areas where flammable liquids, vapors, gases or combustible dusts are likely to occur in quantities sufficient to cause a fire or explosion. Industries that utilize these motors include oil refineries, chemical processing plants, underground coal mines, grain handling and sugar refineries.

The IECEx Certified Equipment Scheme presently operates in 31 countries that have agreed to accept accredited equipment certifications to IEC standards. These motors also carry ATEX Certification for the European Union.
